33a - defend the importance of James Oglethorpe, Charter of 1732, reasons for settlement (charity, economics, and defense), Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove, and the city of Savannah
James Oglethorpe is a very important person. He came up with the idea of making a colony for the poor and unfortunate. He sailed on the Anne to reach Georgia. He sailed with the debtors and the 20 other trustees. He first settled in Savannah and he instantly started building Savannah.
The reasons for the settlement are, charity, economics and defense. Charity came into play because of the debtors. These debtors were brought to the colony so that they could start a new and successful life. The economics in England were very bad at the time so the opened up a new colony so that they could earn more money from mercantilism (exporting more than importing). Defense in Georgia played a very big role in GA because Spain was always on the verge of attacking.
Mary musgrove was also a very important idle at this time. She was a translator for both Oglethorpe and tomochichi she spoke both creek and English. She was also very good in forming peace within the two nations.
