Poetry
Poetry is a way of writing that comes in many forms and is used by many authors. There are many different literary elements in poetry. The literary elements are: alliteration, couplet, hyperbole, imagery, metaphor, rhyme scheme, internal rhyme, end rhyme, onomatopoeia, personification, repetition, rhythm, simile, stanza, pun, triplet, verse, assonance, haiku, ballad, ode, epic, elegy, quatrain and allusion.
Alliteration is the repetition of the first letter or sound of a sentence or line.
A couplet is a poem made of two rhyming lines.
Example couplet: The night was fast the day was slow Especially when there is no place to go Imagery is when the author is so descriptive that you could imagine it in your head and what it looks like.

A metaphor is a comparison not using like or as.

The pattern of rhyme between lines of a poem is rhyme scheme.
Example: Look children on this glorious day when the sun shines bright and the children play we are sad now that its night Two or more rhyming words in the same line is internal rhyme.
End rhyme is rhyming at the end of each line in a stanza.
Onomatopoeia are words used as sounds.
Personification means giving human traits to a non human thing.
Repetition is the repeating of a line, stanza, or even a word.
Rhythm is expressed through stressed and unstressed syllables.
A comparison uses like or as.

A stanza is a paragraph in poetry and consists of lines.
A pun is making a joke exploiting the meaning of that word.
A triplet is a three lined stanza.
A verse is a line in a poem.
Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds to make internal rhyme.
A haiku is a Japanese five to seven line poem.
A ballad is a soft two stanza poem that is to the same melody.
An ode is lyric poetry.
An epic is a lengthy narrative poem.
An elegy is a poem of serious reflection.
A quatrain is a stanza that has four lines.
Allusion is a figure of speech, also called a reference.
